GLOSA - Green wave optimal speed advisory

The reduction of CO2 emissions is one of the most anticipated features of future transportation systems. Green light optimal speed advisory systems (GLOSA) can contribute to achieve this by informing approaching
drivers about optimal speed of vehicle. Such software or signs can have huge impact on environmental related metrics and can increase the comfort of drivers by reducing waiting times and the number of stops.

System and method for providing onboard traffic information

United States Patent No. US 9,165,465 B2

A computer-implemented method for providing traffic inforation via a navigation module onboard a moving vehicle, comprising the steps of:
– obtaining geolocalization data of the vehicle
– identyfying the closest traffic light ahead the vehicle
– retrieving from a remote traffic light server operational information to determine an optimal speed at which the vehicle should move to arrive at the closest traffic light when it is ag green phase
– outputing the optimal speed via a user interface

System and method for providing information at a road sign

European Patent No. EP 2 843 641 B1

A computer-implemented method for providing information at a road sign, comprising a display and the method comprising the steps of:
– identifying the closest traffic light ahead the road sign
– retrieving operational information on the identified closest traffic light
– processing the operational information to determine an optimal speed at which vehicles present in proximity to the location of the road sign should move to arrive at the closest traffic light when it is at green phase
– outputting the optimal speed via the display

Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory systems can have crucial benefits both for city councils and for drivers:

Increasing traffic flow

GLOSA system like onboard vehicle software or stationary road sign can increase traffic flow through the intersection, because more vehicles will hit the green light.

Reducing number of stops

Because drivers will know what speed to choose to hit green light, they will be able to avoid a number of stops on red lights when driving through the city.

Reduction of CO2 emmision

When more drivers will go at optimal speed and will avoid stops, CO2 emmision will go down, as it is the highest when accelerating.

Reducing an average vehicle speed

When drivers are informed about optimal speed (within speed limit), they will adjust it to avoid stops. In effect, average speed is lower as well as aplitude of speed (fast acceleration and sudden braking is eliminated), which can have positive impact on safety on the road.

Increasing an efficiency of the ITS system

GLOSA onboard or stationary sign system will increase an efficiency of Intelligent Transportation System operations, as drivers will get a feedback about optimal vehicle speed.
